Meet Marty Auerbach

Meet Marty Auerbach

Marty and his wife Evelyn Auerbach (z"l), and their children Joshua and Ruth, have long and deep connections to the Charles E. Smith Life Communities and Hebrew Home of Greater Washington. Evelyn first became involved with the Hebrew Home in 1972 when she served as treasurer of the Women's Auxiliary, then as Auxiliary President from 1992-93, and as Co-President in 1999. Conscientious and energetic, Evelyn chaired the Starlight Ball and founded the Women's Auxiliary Boutique. She co-chaired the Guardian Committee from 1987-1992 and was secretary of the Hebrew Home's Board for eight years. Evelyn was honored with the Hyman Goldman Humanitarian Award and shared the Aunt Minnie Goldsmith Award with her mother Jane Hirsh. Marty served as treasurer of the then Hebrew Home Men's Club in the 1960s, started the Planned Giving Committee at the Hebrew Home, and supported Evelyn's activities.

And the connections don't end there. Evelyn's father, Dr. Harold Hirsh (z"l), was the first volunteer Medical Director of the Hebrew Home. Her mother, Mrs. Jane Hirsh (z"l), was a President of the Women's Auxiliary and a member of the Board of Directors. Evelyn's parents generously established the Harold and Jane Hirsh Health Center which provides vital geriatric outpatient medical care to our campus and the surrounding community. Seven of their family members have lived at the Home or on the CESLC campus: Evelyn's great-grandmother Anna Kirsch, her grandmother Gertrude Kirsch, her aunt Anna Denniberg, Marty's father David Auerbach, and his uncles Harold Auerbach and Jack Cohen. Evelyn's aunt Lucile Balfour is a resident of Ring House.

On May 15, 2014, Marty, Joshua, and Ruth dedicated the Ring House social hall as the Evelyn Auerbach Social Hall. This gift was given to honor Evelyn's memory and dedication to the Home and to provide general support for the Hirsh Health Center, which is just across the hall.

In addition to Marty, Joshua, and Ruth's major gift support, we will receive a gift from Marty's estate. He is therefore a member of the Builders of the Future Society, for which we are immensely grateful.

If you would like more information on how to support Charles E. Smith Life Communities by establishing a planned gift, please contact Elana Lippa, Director, Gift Planning, at 301.770.8342 or Lippa@ceslc.org .
